What is La Ofrenda (The Altar)?
The heart of the Day of the Dead celebration, the ofrenda is a colorful altar where families honor their loved ones. It’s adorned with photos, candles, marigolds, and offerings such as food and personal belongings.
El corazón de la celebración del Día de los Muertos, la ofrenda es un altar colorido donde las familias honran a sus seres queridos. Está adornada con fotos, velas, cempasúchil y ofrendas como comida y pertenencias personales.
Elements of the Altar/ Elementos de la Ofrenda
The Marigold
Known as the "flower of the dead," marigolds are believed to guide the spirits back to the world of the living with their vibrant color and strong scent. They are often used to decorate altars and graves.
El Cempasúchil
Conocida como la "flor de los muertos," se cree que el cempasúchil guía a los espíritus de regreso al mundo de los vivos con su vibrante color y fuerte aroma. A menudo se utilizan para decorar altares y tumbas.
Bread of the Dead
A sweet bread traditionally baked in the days leading up to the Day of the Dead. It’s often shaped into skulls or bones and represents the generosity of the host.
Pan de Muerto
Un pan dulce que se hornea tradicionalmente en los días previos al Día de los Muertos. A menudo se moldea en forma de calaveras o huesos y representa la generosidad del anfitrión.
Sugar Skulls
These colorful skulls, made from sugar or clay, symbolize the sweetness of life and the presence of death in Mexican culture. They are often decorated with intricate designs and the names of the deceased.

Papel Picado
(ENG) These delicately cut paper banners represent the fragility of life. Often hung around altars and streets, they add a festive atmosphere with their vibrant colors and intricate designs.

Candles
Candles are lit to guide the spirits back to the world of the living. Each candle on the ofrenda represents a soul, and their light is believed to help illuminate the path for the spirits.
Velas

Alebrijes
(ENG) Brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures. While not traditionally part of Day of the Dead, they have become popular in modern celebrations and represent the blending of imagination and tradition.
